Wendel gets the sillies

Wendel

Wendel often gets in trouble for getting too excited, and sometimes he gets a case of the sillies when he gets nervous.

Wendel is learning to stop, think and then do when he feels these big feelings growing.

He needs to learn to be the boss of his emotions so they don’t make him do something that’s going to get him in trouble.

Does this sound like you?

Dad helps Wendel manage his sillies

It’s Sunday afternoon. Emmet and his Dad have had a great weekend, and now they are relaxing.

Wendel feels his emotions growing. He wants to bug his dad and throw his toys.

Maybe if they work together, they can come up with some ways to help Wendel manage his sillies.

Activity 1

Draw me a picture of a time your sillies got you in trouble. Were your feelings being the boss of you? I bet you weren’t trying to get in trouble. Maybe this picture can give everyone a better understanding of how you felt.

Activity 2

There are lots of ways to control your emotions before they get you in trouble, even if you have the sillies.

Here are three you can practice.

  1. Take a time out. Let an adult know you need a break. Make a sign to let them know you need time to get your emotions in check-what would it look like?
  2. Blow up an invisible balloon: take a deep breath in. What colour is your balloon?
  3. Pretend your body is a lemon and you are making lemonade. Squeeze your body as hard as you can. How much lemonade did you make (colour in a lemonade pitcher)?

Activity 3

Wendel makes a silly pose when his dad gets him to stand as still as a statue. What would your statue look like?

Let’s make a plan!

What are some ideas of things we could do next time we start to feel big emotions come?

The Plan Example

What happened?

I was bored after a long day inside.

How did I react?

I was bored after a long day inside.

What can I do instead?

  • Blow up a balloon or squeeze my body like a lemon.

  • Run in one spot.

  • Play the statue game.

Now it’s your turn!

Did you follow the plan? How did it go?

  • Click on the Poppy video that best describes how it all worked out.
  • Don’t forget, plans take practice. Sometimes they work out the first time, sometimes it takes a couple of tries. The important thing is your trying and that you’re working together.
